“I never planned to be a filmmaker. In fact, my first love was football,” says Desmond Bundi, a filmmaker, creative director, and youth advocate. His journey into the entertainment industry wasn’t the traditional route, he didn’t attend film school or have industry connections. Instead, life pushed him into storytelling in the most unexpected way.
A former soccer player, Desmond had dreams of making it big in sports until injuries forced him to step away. “At first, I didn’t know what to do with myself. I had all this energy, all this ambition, but no direction.” That’s when he discovered screenwriting. Armed with nothing but a phone, a passion for storytelling, and an endless curiosity, he dived into learning the craft online.
By 2024, he had founded TeamShirika, a youth-driven creative organization dedicated to empowering young artists in film, music, and storytelling. “I wanted to create a platform where creatives, especially young, struggling ones, could find opportunities, mentorship, and a voice.” His work quickly expanded beyond filmmaking; he became a talent manager, music promoter, and key organizer of industry networking events like Filmmakers Hangout.
Despite challenges, working with limited resources, juggling multiple roles, and pushing for recognition, Desmond never lost sight of his mission. “It’s not just about making films or managing artists; it’s about creating impact. I want to tell stories that matter, bridge the gap between creatives and the corporate world, and make sure young talent doesn’t go unnoticed.”
From the football field to the film industry, Desmond’s path has been anything but ordinary. But if there’s one thing he’s proven, it’s that passion, resilience, and the courage to adapt can turn any unexpected detour into a defining moment.
